Hi everyone,
It's taking me a bit too long to say hi. As Jonas mentioned earlier I'm
taking over sciserver maintainance duties from him. Ultimately I'm here
to make sure you can get your job done as smoothly as possible with
sciserver. I'm coming from a software engineering and devops background,
as well as being an open source fan.
To not spam you let me briefly mention my immediate goals which are
basically 2:
1. /Maintain and upgrade sciserver/. I've already met with the creators
from John Hopkins and have a better idea of what are the future
plans for it. Together with the leaders of HE/Opinas groups, we're
analyzing the different upgrades paths available. Sidenote, I need
to thank Jonas Haase for his always positive attitude and friendly
support as he continues to guide me through this complex piece of
software (and hardware).
2. /Incentivate collaboration via matrix/
(https://matrix.to/#/#python:mpe.mpg.de). Although I don't know a
lot of astronomy/astrophysics, I am happy to provide help in
software areas such as python (and a couple other langs). There are
no stupid questions, I'm just here to help you get your work done.
If you are part of MPE then you already have an account at
chat.mpe.mpg.de ,if you're from outside the institute, you can
use/create an account from any public matrix provider
(https://app.element.io/#/register) and join the channel with the
first link.
I'm summarizing a lot, but if you have any questions whatsoever about
how sciserver works, or what is the best way to achieve a project you
have in mind, or are stuck with a coding problem, please reach out at
any time.
Finally, a quick *technical annoucement*. Different institutes at MPG
have decided to switch the default anaconda repositories. This is due to
their (Anaconda Inc.) recent changes in licensing. What this comes down
to for us, is that you are /_strongly_/ invited to switch to the
conda-forge repositories, then carry on as usual. New compute instances
will slowly be updated so this config is automatic. In the meantime,
this 2 commands take care of it:
conda config --add channels conda-forge
conda config --remove channels defaults
Best,
