[Sciserver-users] New Compute images on the SciServer

Dear SciServer User

This is a quick mail to inform you that the compute images on the SciServer have been updated today.
You will find the new software when you start a new compute container, your existing containers will not change.

The most obvious difference you should see is that the compute interface now defaults to Jupyter Lab instead of Jupyter Notebook.
I believe this provides a more pleasant user experience, but if you prefer the old notebook layout you can launch it under ‘Help’ -> ‘Launch Classic Notebook'

In addition package managers and their included software have been upgraded and a few new software packages have been added:

* Sciserver
   * R 4.1.2.  (a issue where the Kernel would crash has been fixed) 
      * Libraries: bit64, data.table, essentials, httr, jpeg, jsonlite, ProFound,  
   * Full Conda (2021.05)  
      * Astronomical software: Gnuastro, Sextractor, Stilts
      * Astronomical python modules: aimfast, colossus, Corrfunc, dustmaps, extinction, gatspy, HCIplot, hmf, Kapteyn, nway, photutils, PyAstronomy, pycf3, pyimfit, reproject, scikit-image, sep, sfdmap, speclite, specutils
      * Data format interfaces: asdf, h5py, parquet, pytables, pds4-tools   
      * Machine learning: TensorFlow, pytorch, scikit-learn
      * Archive interfaces: Astroquery, NOAOdatalab, PyVo
      * HEALpix/coverage modules: drizzlib, healpy, healsparse, mhealpy, mocpy, pymangle, pymoc 
      * Plotting/Visualisation: astrowidgets, ipyaladin, ipympl, jdaviz, nodejs, plotly, pyESASky, pywwt, seaborn
      * Further modules/tools: argcomplete, beautifulsoup4, chest, dill, DyND, handcalcs, pyarrow, pymc, requests, supersmoother, unittest2   
   * Statistical tools: Cuba, emcee, MultiNest
   * JuPyteR enhancements: import-ipynb, jupyter_contrib_nbextensions, RISE, sidecar
* HETDEX
   * adds the HETDEX_API module
* HEASARC
   * adds the HEASoft software package (6.29) + heasoftpy beta (0.1.22)
   * NICER estimator tool nibackgen3C5
* Xray
   * adds more X-ray astronomy related software: CIAO (4.13), Sixte (2.7.1) & Simput (2.5.0) , BXA
   * S-lang, ISIS & ISISscript
* eSASS 
   * adds the eROSITA software package (eSASSusers_202114)
